THE BUZZ FOR OCTOBER

šŸBuzz Around the FarmšŸ“

A monthly peek at what’s new, sweet, and happening at Fingerlakes Honey Company.

Here are some highlights-

  • ā˜€ļø The Weather:We finally got some rain! It’s not quite a full comeback yet, our stream still doesn’t have a drop of water in it, but we’ll take what we can get. It’s been rough with those dark mornings and early sunsets… we miss summer already! The bees aren’t flying much on these chilly mornings, the geese are honking, and we’ve already pulled out the heated waterers for the chickens. It’s that time of year when chores take a little longer and coffee tastes even better afterward.

    Ā

  • šŸÆ The Beeyard:As the days grow shorter and the weather turns chilly, our ladies are getting ready for winter, with a little help from us, of course. We’ve been feeding them sugar water to boost their winter honey stores and letting them clean up our wax cappings and equipment from the fall harvest. One of the most amazing things about honey bees is what great cleaners they are! It’s much easier to let them take care of the honey-coated equipment than to tackle the sticky mess ourselves. Plus it helps build up their winter stores- it's a win, win.

    Ā

This weekend we did hive inspections, placed their plain sugar feed inside the hives, and bundled them up in their hive jackets for the cold months ahead. We also slipped on mouse guards to keep out any freeloaders looking for a warm winter spot. As long as the hives stay dry and cozy, the girls should be in good shape until spring.

    Ā

  • šŸ” The Chicken Yard:Egg production is slowing down as the daylight fades, but they’re still laying just enough to keep our customers supplied. It’s hard to believe, but some of our new hens are already broody! Unfortunately, it’s not the best time of year for that, and they seem a little young for motherhood just yet, at least until they’ve matured past the ā€˜I want chicks because they’re cute’ phase. šŸ˜‰ Hopefully they’ll get the urge again in spring when we’d really like to hatch chicks.

    Ā

The whole flock has been busy dodging hawks lately, apparently it’s hawk season again! Thankfully, everyone’s safe in their covered area, and so far, no losses to report.

    Ā

  • 🌱 In the Garden

We planted our garlic and some walking onions gifted to us by a friend; can’t wait to see how they do next year! We are also trying the "some plants are perennials" method- we dug up a couple of our love-the-heat hot peppers, rosemary, and lemon grass and repotted them as house plants for the winter. We shall see if it works. So far so good.

    Ā

The last task on the garden list is digging up the horseradish. We’re planning to dry it and hopefully experiment with a new dip recipe or seasoning. Time will tell, so stay tuned!

    Ā

  • šŸ’» Website Improvements

It’s done! Well… as done as a website ever really is, right? šŸ˜„ Stacie’s been buzzing behind the scenes making the site better than ever focusing on accessibility (to be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities), smoother navigation, and fresh content.

    Ā

We now have a brand-new Hive Index pageĀ to make it easier to explore everything Fingerlakes Honey Company has to offer, from recipesĀ and productsĀ to beekeeping classesĀ and blog posts, all in one handy spot.

    Ā

There were also some behind-the-scenes updates to improve SEO, so more honey lovers can find us online, and a beautiful new ā€œAbout the Fingerlakesā€ pageĀ that shares a little about our region and what makes it worth visiting (beyond the bees, of course!). Stacie's favorite addition- you can find it here. (Stacie: "move them around, it's so cool! Ok, I'll stop geeking out now")

    Ā

As always, if you notice anything that doesn’t look quite right or have suggestions to make it even better, please let us know, we love hearing from you!

IN CASE YOU MISSED THEM

The Beehive Cluster

🌌 Celebrating World Space Week: The Beehive Cluster

Happy World Space Week!! What does space have to do with a honey company? Well, two things really- our family and a name! This week we had a special contributor, our daughter! Bailey is an Astrophysics PhD student at RIT, with a passion for space (and honey). In this week's blog, she talked about The Beehive Cluster (Messier 44). This is one of the brightest open star clusters in the sky. Astronomers see it as a nursery of stars; beekeepers like us, see it as a celestial hive. Read her informative and fun blog post

🧪National Chemistry Week Guest Contributor: Dr. Felix Janeway & The Science of HoneyšŸÆ

In celebration of National Chemistry Week, we’re thrilled to feature a special post from our very own Dr. Felix Janeway- scientist, teacher, and proud member of our family (aka Bailey’s husband!). When you marry into a beekeeping family, you quickly find yourself surrounded by more honey than you could ever imagine, and if you’re Felix, that means diving deep into the chemistryĀ that makes it so extraordinary. From its incredible shelf life to its natural ability to fight bacteria, Felix explores how honey’s unique composition makes it one of nature’s most fascinating (and delicious) chemical marvels. We also include some fun chemistry experiments with honey to try at home.
