šBuzz Around the Farmš
A monthly peek at whatās new, sweet, and happening at Fingerlakes Honey Company.
Here are some highlights-
āļø The Weather:We finally got some rain! Itās not quite a full comeback yet, our stream still doesnāt have a drop of water in it, but weāll take what we can get. Itās been rough with those dark mornings and early sunsets⦠we miss summer already! The bees arenāt flying much on these chilly mornings, the geese are honking, and weāve already pulled out the heated waterers for the chickens. Itās that time of year when chores take a little longer and coffee tastes even better afterward.
Ā
šÆ The Beeyard:As the days grow shorter and the weather turns chilly, our ladies are getting ready for winter, with a little help from us, of course. Weāve been feeding them sugar water to boost their winter honey stores and letting them clean up our wax cappings and equipment from the fall harvest. One of the most amazing things about honey bees is what great cleaners they are! Itās much easier to let them take care of the honey-coated equipment than to tackle the sticky mess ourselves. Plus it helps build up their winter stores- it's a win, win.
Ā
This weekend we did hive inspections, placed their plain sugar feed inside the hives, and bundled them up in their hive jackets for the cold months ahead. We also slipped on mouse guards to keep out any freeloaders looking for a warm winter spot. As long as the hives stay dry and cozy, the girls should be in good shape until spring.
Ā
š The Chicken Yard:Egg production is slowing down as the daylight fades, but theyāre still laying just enough to keep our customers supplied. Itās hard to believe, but some of our new hens are already broody! Unfortunately, itās not the best time of year for that, and they seem a little young for motherhood just yet, at least until theyāve matured past the āI want chicks because theyāre cuteā phase. š Hopefully theyāll get the urge again in spring when weād really like to hatch chicks.
Ā
The whole flock has been busy dodging hawks lately, apparently itās hawk season again! Thankfully, everyoneās safe in their covered area, and so far, no losses to report.
Ā
š± In the Garden
We planted our garlic and some walking onions gifted to us by a friend; canāt wait to see how they do next year! We are also trying the "some plants are perennials" method- we dug up a couple of our love-the-heat hot peppers, rosemary, and lemon grass and repotted them as house plants for the winter. We shall see if it works. So far so good.
Ā
The last task on the garden list is digging up the horseradish. Weāre planning to dry it and hopefully experiment with a new dip recipe or seasoning. Time will tell, so stay tuned!
Ā
š» Website Improvements
Itās done! Well⦠as done as a website ever really is, right? š Stacieās been buzzing behind the scenes making the site better than ever focusing on accessibility (to be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities), smoother navigation, and fresh content.
Ā
We now have a brand-new Hive Index pageĀ to make it easier to explore everything Fingerlakes Honey Company has to offer, from recipesĀ and productsĀ to beekeeping classesĀ and blog posts, all in one handy spot.
Ā
There were also some behind-the-scenes updates to improve SEO, so more honey lovers can find us online, and a beautiful new āAbout the Fingerlakesā pageĀ that shares a little about our region and what makes it worth visiting (beyond the bees, of course!). Stacie's favorite addition- you can find it here. (Stacie: "move them around, it's so cool! Ok, I'll stop geeking out now")
Ā
As always, if you notice anything that doesnāt look quite right or have suggestions to make it even better, please let us know, we love hearing from you!
