THE BUZZ FOR AUGUST

šŸBuzz Around the FarmšŸ“

Here are some August highlights-

  • ā˜€ļø Sunshine & Swelter Still:Our bees were working overtime in the hot, sunny days of August (and beginning of September). We've been watching them gather nectar and pollen from the last of the summer flowers. It has been so hot and dry here in our area of the Finger Lakes, that our ladies (and other stinging insects and amphibians) have been visiting our landscaped watering holes very frequently.

  • šŸÆ Fall Honey Harvest:We finished up extracting our 2025 spring honey and will soon be pulling our fall frames. We are hoping for a successful autumn harvest despite the hot and dry weather.

  • šŸ” The Young Ladies Get Moved:Our 7 feathered girls have been moved to the adult coop at night to try to get them adjusted to their new home. We have yet to get any to go there on their own though.

  • šŸ… Garden Goodness:

Well, what can we say. It's been hot and dry. We attempted to keep our garden watered, but when you are on a well, you have to have priorities. We have been able to pick some tomatoes, although many had blossom end rot. We feed those to the chickens, so it's still a win. We were also able to pick some jalapeno and habanero peppers, herbs, as well as potatoes. All small, but alive. Our pumpkins are looking very sad. How did your garden do this summer?

  • 🧺 Fruit Bonanza:We picked the last of the blackberries. We probably got at least 10 lbs. Our grape harvest was the biggest ever- 50lbs!!! We are now into full honey jam and jellyĀ making mode. Get yours today.

  • šŸ’» Website Improvements

We are still in the process of revamping our website for accessibility, ease of use, and design. When you visit in the next few weeks, you might want to refresh our pages to make sure you are seeing the most recent changes. If you have any difficulty finding something or something doesn't look right, please let us know. Thank you.

REMEMBERING DOOLITTLE
REMEMBERING DOOLITTLE

REMEMBERING DOOLITTLE

- special contributor Peter Sieling

Every once in a while, you come across someone in history who didn’t just leave behind a legacy—they left behind a way of life. Gilbert M. Doolittle, the father of commercial queen-rearing, was one of those extraordinary souls. His methods shaped modern beekeeping. His words sparked thought, laughter, and plenty of lively debate. And his deep devotion to bees and truth—not theory—cemented his place in apicultural history.

Ā

We’re honored to share this heartfelt tribute, written by Peter Sieling, marking the 100th anniversary of Doolittle’s passing. It’s more than a biography—it’s a window into the life of a man who lived simply, worked tirelessly, and believed that bees (and people) thrive best with care, strength, and a little grit. If you haven't read our other blog post that Peter wrote "Walking in the Footsteps of Giants"Ā about the history of beekeeping in the Finger Lakes, bee sure to check it out!
