THE BUZZ FOR JULY
THE BUZZ FOR JULY

šŸBuzz Around the FarmšŸ“

We've had a Bee-sy July here at Fingerlakes Honey Company.

Here are some highlights-

  • Ā Sunshine & Swelter:July brought the heat in full force! The bees were finally able to get out and work without dodging rainclouds, and boy, were they busy. The fields were buzzing, the clover was blooming, and the girls were hauling in nectar like champs.

  • Ā Spring Honey Harvest:We pulled the honey supers off the hives early in the month. This spring’s harvest has a beautifully light color with floral notes that are absolutely swoon-worthy. Get yours today!

  • Ā The Teen Chickens Take Over:Our 13 feathered teenagers are now full-fledged awkward young adults. The ā€œguess-that-roosterā€ game is still on, and let’s just say…it’s getting louder in the mornings. Crow-offs, anyone?

  • Ā Rooster Rehoming? We are looking to place a few of our young surplus roosters in loving homes. We wish we could keep them all, but they would definitely have some issue with our 2 main men. These young boys are well mannered, beeutifully feathered, and will make a great addition to your flock. Currently there are 4 available. Let us know if you’re interested!

  • Ā Garden Goodness:

The herbs and veggies exploded with growth this month. We've been picking dill, basil, oregano, garlic, and more. The tomatoes are just starting to blush and our pumpkins are getting larger. Our mint patch is thriving, and the bees have been enjoying the blossoms right alongside us. Next up- hot peppers and potatoes!

  • Ā Berry Bonanza:July brought the tail end of our wild black raspberry harvest. We are currently picking blackberries and wild blackberries. We are now into full honey jam and jellyĀ making mode. Get yours today.

  • Ā Website Improvements

We are in the process of revamping our website for accessibilty, ease of use, and design. When you visit in the next few weeks, you might want to refresh our pages to make sure you are seeing the most recent changes. If you have any difficulty finding something or something doesn't look right, please let us know. Thank you.weather will allow us to get the rest of our veggies planted. Wings crossed!

When Scents Make Sense...to Avoid: Understanding Fragrance Allergies, MCAS and Chemical Sensitivities

- special contributor Stacie Filer

Imagine walking into a store, a church, or even your friend’s house, only to be hit with a wave of scent that feels like you just got tackled by a flowery linebacker. Your eyes water. Your throat closes up. Your head pounds. And all you want to do is escape. If you are nodding in miserable recognition, you are not alone and there is no better time to talk about it than now. July 8th was National Allergy Day, a moment to acknowledge the countless individuals whose immune systems go into battle mode over everyday substances. But for some of us, allergies do not just mean pollen, pets, or peanuts. They mean scented candles, air fresheners, perfume, shampoo, new paint, cooking smells, and cleaning sprays. Fragrance allergies, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) are not just annoying, they are disabling. They can hijack your life, one scented product at a time. So in the spirit of awareness and self-preservation, come and explore what these conditions really are, how they affect people like me, and even how they are impacting honey bees. Yes, seriously, bees.

WALKING THE FOOTSTEPS OF GIANTS

WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GIANTS

- special contributor Peter Sieling

Every now and then, we stumble across a piece of history so rich, so wonderfully aligned with our passions, that we can’t help but share it, and this is one of those moments. While digging into the roots of beekeeping in our beloved Finger Lakes region, we discovered an incredible article that not only brought the past to life, but also reminded us that we are truly walking in the footsteps of beekeeping legends. Peter Sieling’s journey through time, tracing the lives and legacy of the Cogshall brothers and G.M. Doolittle, is more than just a scenic trip across New York’s backroads. It’s a love letter to the beekeepers who built the foundations we now stand on. These pioneers lived, worked, innovated, and quite literally changed the way honey was harvested, and they did it right here in our neck of the woods.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP: 5 WAYS TO BEE A FRIEND TO BEES

Friendship comes in all shapes, sizes, and sometimes wings! Today on International Day of Friendship, we’re celebrating the powerful connections that make life richer—not just between people, but between humans and the humble honey bee. These tiny friends are tireless workers, community-minded, and wildly generous with their gifts. They pollinate one-third of the food we eat, make our world bloom, and ask for so little in return. If that’s not the definition of a good friend, we don’t know what is. So today, we invite you to beeĀ a better friend to the bees—with small, sweet actions that add up to a big impact.
